Separation of Impurity Elements in Fuel Solution of Medical Isotope Production Reactor

  • The accumulation of fission products after long-term operation of Medical Isotope Production Reactor (MIPR) will affect the normal operation of the reactor and needs to be removed regularly, such as removing of those fission elements in simulated MIPR fuel solution using joint method of hydrated manganese dioxide (HMD), hydrated antimony pentoxide (HAP) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3). After the simulated solution containing impurities is purified with joint method, nearly 100% of Zr and Se, more than 95% of Sr, more than 80% of Ru and Ce can be removed. Removal yield of Sm can reach 72.2%. The concentrations of Al, Sb and Mn in solution are less than 10 mg/L. The average loss rate of uranium is 0.83%. The combined use of the three exchangers can meet the design requirements of MIPR fuel purification.
