On-line wear measurement of an engine using thin layer activation method with charged particles

Abstract
Wear of the top compression piston ring and the cylinder bore in a ZS1105 diesel engine was simultaneously and on line measured by using thin layer activation (TLA) method. Under the experimental conditions, the minimum detectable wear thickness was 9 and 100 nm for cylinder bore and piston ring in 300 s counting interval, respectively. Some details of the design, operation and experiment results of the wear measurement system are also presented
